According to Daily News, a rapper who was convicted of murder and facing a life term without the possibility of parole has passed away of  a drug overdose in Brooklyn, New York.

Forty year old, Michael Garrett was the co-leader of a Brooklyn gang called “Together Forever Mafia” who also doubled as a hip-hop organizer, died at the Metropolitan Detention Center on February 28, 2016.

A spokeswoman for the city medical examiner said that Michael’s death has been classified as accidental, due to cardiovascular disease with a contributing factor of an over of synthetic marijuana.

After the Daily News informed Garrett’s former lawyer James Lisa of the autopsy results, he said “I’m Incredulous.” ” He was in Federal custody. Thats not like Rikers Island or county facility.” Cherie Nolan, a prison consultant said it was unusual for an inmate in a federal jail to die of an illegal drug overdose in a high-security facility like the Brooklyn lock up.

“The feds usually do a good job of keeping contraband out,” Nolan said. “The security in place for a people going in and out of facilities, and the performance of staff, has to greatly improved”

Daily News uncovered that last spring before this trial in Brooklyn Federal Court, Garrett had tested positives for marijuana shortly after receiving a visit from his girlfriend.

She was banned from seeing him for a period of time. Garrett and co-defendant Paul Rivera were both convicted of racketeering, murder, sex trafficking of underage prostitutes and drug trafficking. Rivera, the founder of TF Mafia is scheduled to be sentenced June 28, 2016. While Garrette’s conviction has been vacated along with the restitution we would have to pay victims by federal judge.
