A U.S. Court has deemed dreadlocks as unprofessional in a recent case. The lawsuit was filed by the EEOC due to Chasity Jones, whose job offer was revoked after the human resources manager made a comment stating, “they tend to get messy, although I’m not saying yours are, but you know what I’m talking about.” This cost Jones her opportunity at a great job because she had dreadlocks and not because of her actual contributions to the company.

This topic is a tough one and it has been long debated whether dreadlocks are considered appropriate for work. This can make anyone feel uncomfortable, especially African Americans in particular, being dreadlocks are a common way of life for the community. This rule predominately affects blacks, which makes the community feel discriminated against. What if we took race out of the question, and switched to gender. The same would go for majority women, of any race, if hair extensions in the workplace were unprofessional because “they could get messy.”
