DIVERSITY IS KEY

Eleven Lessons in Self-Leadership is an amazing book written by Larry Holman. After reading this book, I would like to share ten tips that may help you see things differently in your life.

  1. Learn to be a good listener. By listening carefully to diverse opinions, you can learn to appreciate the value of the diversity.
  2. Bring more women into management. Women often have a different take on things, a new perspective that can benefit the company
  3. Expand your circle of friends and associates. Get to know individuals who are different, perhaps very different from you.
  4. Seek out the advice of older persons. Listen to the stories of their experiences.
  5. Encouraging diversity can enhance and develop creativity. Allow yourself to look at the world in a way that is open to all possibilities.
  6. Learn to consider alternatives in every situation. Think in terms of “relative” rather than “absolute” facts.
  7. Attend cultural events or classes to learn more about different countries. In today’s rapidly changing world, you never know where your market may to tomorrow.
  8. Keep your ego in check by weighing the advice of diverse viewpoints.
  9. Introduce yourself to music from other cultures. You might begin by browsing in the “world beat” section of a large record shop.
  10. Know yourself. Analyze your own background and upbringing. Did you grow up with biases toward certain groups of people, whether based on gender, skin color, religion or something else? If so, consider how you were shaped by this upbringing and how you can overcome these prejudices. The key to overcoming prejudice is first being aware of it.
