“Louisiana”
Hello readers, I’m sorry that I have not been writing as consistently as I once was at some point. But today a series of new laws took effect in the state of Louisiana and I felt that it was only right that I inform you guys on whats going on.
1. On the streets
Cities, towns, villages that use cameras to catch speeders will have to post signs to notify drivers. If there are no signs, those municipalities can not use the images from the traffic cameras to ticket drivers.
Drivers education students will soon be getting lessons on how to interact with police officers during a traffic stop. The purpose of this law is to reduce tension and violent encounters.
2. School
Paddling students will be outlawed for kids with disabilities. Public school students will no longer need a doctor’s note to bring sunscreen into schools. Litter prevention and awareness lessons will be added to the curriculum for elementary students.
3. Health Care
Minors will face tougher restrictions for getting an abortion. As of today, a legal guardian must provide an valid I.D. along with a notarized statement allowing the procedure to be done. As Louisiana’s Right to Try Act broadens, terminally ill patients will have expanded access to experimental treatments.
4. Criminal Justice
Governor John Bell Edwards’ overhaul has taken effect, including sentencing law changes, a statute aimed to help ex-offenders obtain occupational licenses, and a provision to shrink fines and court fees if they cause financial hardship. Some inmates convicted of murder as teenagers will be eligible for a chance at parole after serving at least 25 years.
